I Want To Break Free – Part 1

If there’s one thing that holds us back from being the best we can be, it’s the fear of breaking out of our comfort zone.  It’s comfortable in here – why on earth would I want to leave?  It’s taken me years to get here and get good at the stuff I do, so I’m fine right here!  In fact I can do most of this stuff with my eyes shut.

Comfort Zone Paralysis

And therein lies the problem.  If we want to do better, do more, go faster, longer, higher than before, we need to break out of our comfort zone.  Feel the fear, feel scared, be unsure, go back to being a novice and learn something all over again.  For most of us, that’s pretty uncomfortable.

Where the cool stuff is

All the cool stuff happens outside your comfort zone.  Whether it’s doing that bungee jump, taking your driving test, starting your own business or asking someone out on a date, all the cool stuff happens just outside your comfort zone. In fact that’s where life starts!  I’ve spoken to many close friends who, after making a major life change, have said “I wish I’d done that years ago!”

Our top tips to help you break free

So over the next few blogs we’ll be giving you our top tips on how to break out of your comfort zone and start making positive changes in your life.  We all have these things we’d love to do, but haven’t quite got round to.  Like going to the gym, losing some weight, moving job, asking for a raise, starting your own business, completing a marathon, etc, etc.

So let’s get started

One of the best ways to start make changes in your life is to make a habit of it.  Literally make a habit of it.  So our first tip is to try something new or different every day. It doesn’t need to be huge.  Start with the little things.  Get up 10 minutes early and meditate, sleep on the other side of the bed, try tea in the morning instead of coffee, wear a t-shirt to work, listen to a different radio station, say only positive things to people for a whole day…..  The list goes on and on.  Building a habit of making small changes helps builds a mindset so you can make some bigger changes.  If you can get into the habit of doing something new or different every single day, making bigger changes won’t seem such a nightmare.

Find your passion

To find your passion in life you need to try stuff.  The marketing slogan “Just do it” sums it up well.  It may be daunting, even embarrassing, but if you don’t try new things you’ll never know if you’ll like them or not. Be brave, feel the fear and do it anyway.

Your first challenge – try it today

There’s no time like the present so sit back and think what you could do today that is new or different.  Then do it.  Find out where your comfort zone is and start pushing against it, every day.
